Obituary reads:
One of the most prominent farmers and a highly esteemed resident of Cross Creek Township, died at his home near Reed's Mills, Ohio, Tuesday evening, Feb. 20th, 1906, at 9:45 o'clock.
Mr. Leech had been confined to his home for about two and one-half years, a sufferer from rheumatism, yet through all his suffering, he was brave, cheerful and patient trusting implicitly in his Savior for the needed help and strength. During the past few months a slight improvement had been noticed in his condition, but on Monday, he was taken suddenly ill, and all that careful nursing and medical skill could do, proven unavailing and he slept peacefully away.
John Leech, the eldest son of Samuel and Anne Hayes Leech, was born May 20, 1830, on a farm within two miles of the one on which he died.
On Feb. 23, 1860, he was united in marriage to Margaret Reed, she being left to mourn the loss of this devoted husband.
Mr. Leech was a man of firm convictions and courageous in doing what he thought to be right, a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church, and for thirty-one years, a ruling elder in the Two Bridges congregation, ever faithful and conscientious in the performance of the duties required of him and as long as he was physically able in his attendance at the church services, always having its best interests at heart.
At his late home on Bantam Ridge, Feb. 23rd, at 1:30 P.M. a large assemblage of friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to one who had lived a long and useful line in their midst and to listen to the very impressive funeral sermon spoken by his pastor, Rev. H.V. Clark.
Rev. Webb of Hopedale, a former pastor, and Rev. Bowers of the M.E. Church, Wintersville, also spoke feelingly of the sterling integrity, true worth and Christian character of the deceased.
Mr. Leech was a man of marked intellectual attainments and possessed a fund of information that made him a valued friend.
He was general in his home life, ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, a kind husband and father, one whose advice and counsel will be missed in the home as well as in the community.
To the wife, the 23rd of February was a sad anniversary of their 40th wedding day, when all that was mortal of the husband was tenderly carried by his nephews and laid to rest at the Two Ridges cemetery there to await the resurrection.
Besides the wife, the following children survive: Mrs. Henry Woods and Mrs. James Woods, Kellog, Iowa; Mrs. B.F. VanKannel, Valparaiso, Ind.; John Neil, Pierre, South Dakota; George E., Jennie, Frances and Harriet, at home, also the brother W. T. Leech, who resides at the old homestead, but they mourn not as those without hope, for he has only gone on before.
