9. John William² Melvin (John Henry¹) was born in Scott Twp, Adams Co, Ohio July 30, 1858. John died November 17, 1943 in Orange Co, CA, at 85 years of age.

He married Sarah Arnetta Dunn in Kansas, 1883. Sarah was born in Washington Twp, Brown Co, Ohio October 6, 1859. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Dunn and Tamer unknown. Sarah died December 16, 1936 in Orange Co, CA, at 77 years of age. In the 1900 census Chetoka City, Labette Co, Kansas, page 39, John (age 41) is recorded with his wife Sarah (age 40), Nola (age 15), Alta (age 13), Leman (age 12), Hattie (age 8), Wilber (age 4). They have been married for 17 years and have had 5 children with 5 living at the time of the census. John is noted as a grain buyer and they rent their home.

John William Melvin and Sarah Arnetta Dunn had the following children:

12 i. Nolie Tess³ Melvin was born in Highland Co, OH August 30, 1884. Nolie died October 30, 1970 Canton, McPherson Co, KS, at 86 years of age. She married Chester Enfield Godown McPherson Co, KS, June 30, 1915. Chester was born Canton, McPherson Co, KS December 09, 1886. Chester was the son of Mark Finley Godown and Elizabeth Belle Laff. Chester died June 11, 1958 Canton, McPherson Co, KS, at 71 years of age. Buried at Boise City Cemetery, Boise City, Cimarron Co, Oklahoma. 13 ii. Alta M Melvin was born in Medina Co, Ohio July 1886.

14 iii. Leman M Melvin was born in Medina Co, Ohio March 1888.

15 iv. Hattie B Melvin was born in Kansas July 1891.

16 v. Wilbur L Melvin was born in Kansas February 1896.
