He married Elizabeth Maria McClure in Lawrence Co, PA, about 1860. Elizabeth was born in Lawrence Co, PA September 23, 1840. She is with her family in Shenango, Lawrence Co, PA in 1850 page 164 age 8. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel McClure and Mary Margaret Bortmass.

Elizabeth died before 1900. In the 1850 census Mahoning Twp, Lawrence Co, PA page 2, Joseph (age 19) is listed with his parents James (age 46) and Mary (age 42) along with 4 sisters and grandmother. He has an occupation listed as Farmer

Joseph D. Sankey is listed under New Castle, PA, as having served as a Private in Co. F, 12th. Inf. Companies F & H were recruted at New Castle, PA. He served in the Civil War from April 15th, 1861 until the Co. was mustered out of service on August 5, 1861. (Reference from M. E. Sica research)

In the 1870 census New Castle, Lawrence Co, page 129, Joseph (age 39) is recorded with Maria (age 28) and Dick (age 5). Joseph is an Inn Keeper born in PA.

In the 1880 census Shenango, Lawrence Co, Pennsylvania page 258, Jas. D Sankey (age 46) is recorded with his wife Maria (age 40), Dicky (age 15), Mary (age 7), BroL Hillory McClure (age 33), and MotherL Mary McClure (age 62). Joseph is an Agt. Wholesale Liquor House and was born in Pa.

In the 1900 census Pulaski Twp, Lawrence Co Pa page 195B, Joseph (age 69), noted as widowed, is living as a boarder in the household of Joseph Waters.

Joseph D Sankey and Elizabeth Maria McClure had the following children:

16 i. Richard⁴ Sankey was born in New Castle, Lawrence Co, PA 1865. Richard had 4 children: Ruth, Blanche, Joe, and Mildred.

17 ii. Mary J Sankey was born in Shenango, Lawrence Co, PA 1873. She married unknown Wallace. Unknown was born about 1862.
