1. Dean Clarence¹ Smith was born Illinois March 29, 1852. Dean died 1913 in Knoxville, Marion Co, Iowa, at 61 years of age.

He married Amanda Melvina Knapp in Buffalo Prarie, Rock Island Co Il, December 28, 1875. Amanda was born in Illinois City, Rock Island Co, Illinois August 6, 1856. Amanda was the daughter of Thomas K Knapp and Amanda Melvina Bruner. Amanda died May 1, 1915 in Linden, Dallas Co, IA, at 58 years of age. In the 1880 census Persifer, Knox Co, Illinois page 311, Dean (age 27) is recorded with his wife Amanda (age 23), Carice (age 2) and John Peterson (age 29). Dean is a farmer born in Illinois.

Dean Clarence Smith and Amanda Melvina Knapp had the following children:

2 i. Carice B² Smith was born Illinois May 29, 1878. She married John M Hayes about 1900. John was born about 1878.

3 ii. Celia Mary Smith was born Illinois February 11, 1886. She married G. C. Pruitt in craw Crawford Co, Illinois, about 1910. G. was born in Kansas 1882.

4 iii. Clarence H Smith was born Illinois May 24, 1892. He married Gertrude Fields about 1915. Gertrude was born Illinois about 1892.
