He married Annie unknown in New Jersey, 1879. Annie was born in New Jersey May 1861. In the 1880 census Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 328, John (age 24), is recorded with his wife Annie (age 20), living with John's family Jacob and Elizabeth.

In the 1900 census Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 143, John (age 43), is recorded with his wife Annie (age 39), Nettie (age 14), Charles (age 11), and Elizabeth (age 8). They have been married for 20 years and have had 4 children with 3 living at the time of the census. John is a farmer.

John Ulmer and Annie unknown had the following children:

7 i. Nettie³ Ulmer was born in Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ June 1885.

8 ii. Charles B Ulmer was born in Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ May 1889. Charles died 1890 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, at 1 year of age. Buried in Frenchtown Cemetery Frenchtown, Hunterdon Co., NJ

9 iii. Chester C Ulmer was born in Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ 1889. Chester died 1890 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, at 1 year of age. Buried in Frenchtown Cemetery Frenchtown, Hunterdon Co., NJ

10 iv. Elizabeth Ulmer was born in Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ October 1891.
