In the 1900 census his birth is recorded as Dec 1883. James died April 24, 1970 Los Angeles, LA Co, CA, at 87 years of age.

He married Estella M Borst Iowa, 1909. Estella was born Illinois 1881. In the 1910 census Linden town, Linn Twp, Dallas Co, Iowa page 119, James (age 26) is recorded with his wife Estella (age 28) and step daughter Blanch S Gazo (age 9). They have been married for 1y 2m, and he works in or owns a gun shop. He owns his home with no mortgage.

In the 1920 census Cass Twp, Guthrie Co, Iowa page 216, James (age 37) is living with Stella (age 38), Blanch his step daughter (age 18) and June (age 8). He has the occupation of farmer and rents his farm.

James Edwin Godown and Estella M Borst had the following child:
